Hank &
Bernice McCrorie - Owners, Burly Wines
Hank McCrorie grew up in
Charlotte, North Carolina and attended Lenoir Rhyne College. He
was captain of the football team which was ranked number one
among small colleges. Hank began what was to become a long and
successful career selling pharmaceuticals for Pfizer, reaching
the level of Executive Vice President of sales. After 40 years
with Pfizer, Hank and his wife Bernice, who was born and raised
in Sonoma County, California, decided to retire in Napa Valley.
They both felt it was one of the most beautiful places in the
country and looked forward to many years relaxing and enjoying
great wine.
Hank & Bernice have a
fondness for robust California Cabernet, and when the
opportunity came from the Simpkins Ranch in the Coombsville area
of Napa Valley to buy grapes from 9 ½ acres of newly planted Cabernet
Sauvignon they finally had a chance to turn a hobby into a
passion. Hand-crafted at a small boutique winery owned by Fred Razi, where the McCrories were introduced to the Monticelli
brothers winemaking team, Burly came to life in 2004.
Massimo &
Mario Monticelli - Winemakers, Burly Wines
Massimo and Mario Monticelli
are fourth generation winemakers, who were introduced to Napa
Valley winemaking by true masters in the craft. Mario was able
to work under the direction of Philippe Melka, producing high
end wines with artisan techniques and style. Massimo spent his
early career working at the famed Cabernet winery, Silver Oak
until he left to focus his efforts on consulting for small
boutique labels.
The Monticelli Brothers
understand the McCrorie’s vision. They recognize the quality and
health of the vineyard, maintained by the highly skilled and
well-known viticulturalist, Michael Wolf, and unique terroir of
the Coombsville area of Napa Valley. Massimo and Mario try to
guide the winemaking process in such a way that the fullness of
the grapes is expressed with as little outside influence as
possible. The BURLY Team believes that small production is the
key to maintaining a high quality wine, which they often find
time to share over a great steak and a beautiful Napa Valley
sunset.
